How to Know if You'll Like a Book

Those Starts

The author is not trying to enhance your reading experience, the author is trying to hook you. Frankly, a really interesting start is almost a bad sign. So you need to tolerate mildly interesting starts.

Really, the start is a time to build setting and characters -- the pieces that will make the middle of the book really intersting. So the start should be less interesting than the rest of the book.

And a beginning author has to feed the monster and convince publishers the start has a good hook. Those can end up sounding goofy if you think about them.

I suspect some authors just take a while to get rolling.

There are obvious warning signs at the start, but they vary from person to person. Basically, you should give the author a little slack at the start. (Not a lot, though.)
